Ear Piercing Advice?

Alyssa wants her ears pierced. She's asked several times now, and other than the fact that it's a teeny peek ahead to her young adulthood when she'll leave me (sob), I'm pretty much OK with it.

Now that this subject is on my mind, I'm curious as to what your experience is/was? Do you have a child with pierced ears, and if so, how old was she (or he :) and where did you get it done? Do you have any advice that might be of use?

I've created a poll (on the right) for ear piercing age, and any other info you might have to share could be left as a comment to this post? (Hint hint ;)

Thanks!!

I don't think there is anything wrong with getting them done so long as she is aware of looking after them. I got mine done very young (about 5 or 6 I think) and my Mum always made sure I wore good quality earrings. Now many years later and I can't wear cheap ones at all, they give me terrible trouble. So invest in decent ones and warn her of the danger of the cheap ones xx

Thanks :) Both DH and I have explained to her how she'll have to care for them, and of course I'll help her.

It's funny because when I was young I could wear any kind of earring (mine were pierced in my early teens) but now my ears get irritated by cheap metal. DH (had one ear done as a teen) needed 14k gold from day 1 or he'd get an infection. I'm curious to see who DD will take after.

LOL, DH made a comment: "You're going to cost Daddy a fortune" so clearly he intends to get her high quality earrings :)

I do think about that (aging her too quickly). Last summer (when she was five) I was very strict about bathing suits and tank tops - some of her friends wore bikinis and spaghetti strap tops already, and I think that five is far too young for that. I'm sure I'll feel the same way this year for her sixth summer.

I'm on the fence about earrings because while they do add some sophistication, they're not revealing the way that some clothing worn by young girls these days is...

I wanted to have our dd's ears pierced early, but was unsure. However, I kept seeing babies and

little girls with pretty little earrings and knew our dd would look so cute with them too. Since

you are noticing other little girls with earrings like I did, then you're mommy intuition is

telling to go ahead now.

Asked our ped who urged me to go ahead when mommy can care for them. She gave me some suggestions

for moms having their dd's ears pierced including some OTC meds to minimize any discomfort. They

worked fine and our dd looks adorable with little gold studs and never plays with them.

If you'd like our ped's suggestions, write me an e-mail and I'll send them to you.
